FAQs

Veo scooters are a fantastic resource! For answers to common questions, view the FAQ list below.

What is the Rate to Ride?

$1 to unlock the scooter

$0.39 per ride minute
(rates subject to change)

Riders will be charged through the VeoRide app. Make sure to stay tuned to the app; Veo will occasionally offer promotions and ride credits!

Hours of Availability

Scooters are available to ride no matter the day or time! Veo Scooters can be ridden 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Scooter availability can be viewed within the VeoRide App.

For SIU students who need transportation later at night, Saluki Twilight Transit offers a safe means of transportation for SIU students both on and off campus.

I've never ridden a scooter before. How does this work?

Riding a scooter is easy! Veo offers an Education Mode in the Veo app, which will reduce the maximum scooter speed and allow the rider to start slowly while getting used to the controls.

The right handlebar contains:

  • Throttle (push with thumb)
  • Rear brakes (pull with 2-3 fingers)

The left handlebar contains:

  • Bell
  • Front brakes

It's highly recommend to use the rear brakes when stopping the scooter. Do not use the front brakes by themselves; using the front brakes when trying to stop can cause the rider's forward momentum to pitch them over the handlebars.

When preparing to accelerate, the rider can use their foot to push the scooter forward. Gaining 1-2mph can create an easier transition to the acceleration speed.

Allow plenty of room to slow down and stop. This protects the rider and pedestrians from potential crashes.

Where can I ride a scooter in Carbondale?

Scooters can be ridden anywhere bikes are allowed. Designated bike lanes and multi-use paths (such as Piles Fork Greenway and the Downtown Campus Bike Path) are ideal.

When those aren’t available, riders can ride in the street. Please stay as close as possible to the right-hand side of the road.

In the case that this option is deemed not possible or too dangerous, riders may ride on the sidewalk. Make sure to give any pedestrians present the right-of-way and ample warning of the scooter's presence.

On campus, scooters can be driven anywhere except for crosswalks. Please dismount scooters and walk them through any crosswalks.

Please see the Carbondale Bike Map for the locations of bikeways throughout town.

How old do I need to be to ride a scooter?

According to Veo policy, riders need to be over 18 years old to ride a scooter.

Per the State of Illinois policy, riders need to hold a valid driver's license or learning permit.

Where can I park the scooters?

There are 9-11 designated scooter parking areas throughout town. A parking area is the best place to park a scooter! If there is not a parking area close by, look for a bike rack and park the scooter close to it.

A scooter can be left in the city’s right-of-way out of the way of pedestrian walkways, traffic, accessible ramps, and entryways to buildings.

On campus, scooters can be parked on bike racks, designated parking areas, or away from high-traffic areas utilized by pedestrians.

Keep in mind that if scooters are continually left in the way of pedestrians, drivers, and others, the program could lose support from the community.

Can I ride on Campus Lake Trail?

No; Campus Lake Trail is a no-ride zone for e-scooters, bicycles, and skateboards.

How long do the scooters stay charged? Do I have to worry about a dead battery?

Scooters will stay charged for up to 50 miles of travel, which equates to roughly 7-9 hours of ride time.

Veo staff monitor the fleet's battery levels. When a scooter falls under 30% battery, a staff member will replace it with a battery that is fully charged.

If riders encounter a scooter with less than 30% battery, please call Veo Customer Service to report the scooter number for battery replacement.

What can I do if I see a scooter parked in an unsafe location or blocking access for others?

If you find a scooter parked unsafely or blocking access (such as a doorway or sidewalk), please take a picture of the scooter's QR code and the scooter as it is parked, and send it to hello@veoride.com.

Where can I find the city’s complete rules and regulations regarding bikes and micro-mobility?

SIU and Carbondale each have set rules, regulations, and policies for bicycle use. Please stay up to date on all policies for scooters in Carbondale and at SIU.

What can we do to keep scooters in Carbondale and at SIU forever?

It’s easy! Just follow the rules, and encourage others to do the same.

Operating Policy

Policies are in place to ensure the safety of all who use the multi-use paths within our community. Please be sure to abide by policies below to make sure the paths are accessible to everyone!

The Department of Public Safety regulates e-scooters with the same policies as bicycles. For more in-depth policies and safety tips for bicycles use on campus, visit the Department of Public Safety.

For more in-depth policies regarding bicycles and micromobility throughout the city of Carbondale, visit the codelibrary.amlegal.com.

Rules of the Road

  • Follow traffic rules
  • Yield to pedestrians
  • Follow the flow of traffic

While they are not required for riding Veo scooters, helmets are strongly encouraged. Scooters can reach 15mph at full speed, and helmets are crucial to rider safety.

Veo Scooters May NOT be:

  • Operated while the user is impaired or inebriated
  • Operated while the user wearing earbuds or headphones
  • Brought onto the Saluki Express or any Rides Mass Transit service
  • Operated, parked, or brought inside parking garages
  • Brought indoors (inside a residence hall or other campus building, office, or residential home)
  • Operated to transport multiple riders

If users violate any of these policies, they can be issued a ticket (that could result in a fine) by the Department of Public Safety or the Carbondale Police Department and/or receive a policy violation through Veo. If the user is a student, they can also be reported to SIU Student Rights and Responsibilities.

Parking

Riders may park anywhere within the Carbondale service area that is not a prohibited zone. Prohibited parking zones include private property, anywhere that blocks sidewalk or pedestrian accessibility, landscaped areas, parking spots for cars, or building entrances and exits.

When parking a scooter, please keep in mind:

  • Riders must allow 3 feet on either side of parked scooter for pedestrian foot traffic.
  • Riders cannot obstruct sidewalk entrance, ramp, or any other ADA accessibility resource when riding or parking the scooter.
  • Parked scooters cannot block fire hydrants, outdoor furniture, or other safety or pedestrian resources.
  • Riders cannot park on personal property.
  • Scooters cannot be parked in parking spots meant for cars and motorcycles.
  • Scooters should be parked next to or near bicycle racks. Look for the "Park Here" stickers. If parking near a bike rack is not an option, scooters may be parked in bike racks.

If a scooter is parked in a prohibited zone, please call +1 (855) 836-2256 or email hello@veoride.com for Veo staff to come move it.

SIU Campus

To keep our pedestrians safe, crosswalks are a NO RIDE ZONE. Please dismount the scooter and push it across all crosswalks.

When possible, please park scooters at or near the bike racks. Make sure to leave space for personal bicycles.

Please be aware of pedestrians and respect their use of the sidewalks and driving lanes!

Carbondale

When there are no bike lanes or sidewalks available, riders can drive the scooters on the road with normal traffic. Please make sure to follow the laws of the road!

Users are encouraged to park in a way that doesn't block sidewalks, regardless of where they are in the city. This may mean parking in the "parkway" (strip of grass between sidewalk and curb), the side of the sidewalk, or any public hardscaping.

State of Illinois Law

Illinois State Law "provides that a person may operate a low-speed electric scooter where the operation of bicycles is permitted, including, but not limited to, bicycle lanes and bicycle paths, and shall have all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to the rider of a bicycle."

VEO Scooters are regulated as bicycles on both the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus and within the city of Carbondale (except where otherwise specified).
